ROV Subsea Basket with transportation of Flying Leads cables

Butler develops and manufactures a number of smart solutions for industrial automation and the offshore industry.

ROV Subsea Basket was developed and designed a number of years back, and we tailor the tool to the needs of our customers.

One of our customers on the Norwegian continental shelf wanted to find a solution for how they pull out cables to where they will be working on the seabed. Flying leads are used in the safe transfer of hydraulic fluid and/or chemicals between underwater equipment. The challenge was to be able to transport Flying Leads cables from vessels to the seabed and then get hold of the end of the cable with the ROV and unroll the cable from the basket. (Flying Leads cables are used as a link between subsea structures and the distribution unit.)

Adaptations and solutions

We solved this by re-designing the ROV Subsea Basket to fit the cables, and making sure that the ROV could get hold of them. A simple adaptation by dividing a standard basket into several rooms, as well as hanging on brackets for easy handling of flying leads. Execution was done using standard products, as well as 3D-printed brackets. This resulted in the delivery of this solution in a very short time in a cost-effective manner. During the adaptation, we ensured that all requirements were met throughout the entire production process, we tested and certified.
